Pattern Mixing- Part 1

Mixing patterns in your space can seem daunting at times, but can actually be easy once you understand how patterns go together. In this first blog in our Pattern Series we will break down different types of common patterns and how they can work together with other patterns to bring your space together. We’ll also throw in some design tips to help you out!

Consider this a guide that you can refer back to any time you need it.

DESIGN TIPS

  1. While mixing patterns can do a lot to a space, it is important to remember to show some restraint. Mix in some solids to break up patterns. This will allow the eye a place to rest.

  2. Make sure to distribute patterns evenly around the space to avoid an unbalanced look.

  3. Aim for 2-3 patterns in a space and make sure that you are switching up the scale for the best result. Consider the 60/30/10 approach: Use 60% of Pattern 1, 30% of Pattern 2, and 10% of a third pattern as an accent.

  4. Pay attention to color: if you are working with primary colors, you’ll want to avoid pastels. Don’t underestimate tone-on-tone patterns - they will still add much-needed depth to your space.

  5. Match patterns outside of fabrics/wallpapers. If there is a triangular pattern in your area rug you can match this pattern to a piece of furniture with a design detail that mimics this pattern- such as a hairpin table leg.

  6. Pillows are a great way to incorporate pattern. They can immediately change the look of your room and are easy to switch out if you like to change things up every now and then.
