There are several different reasons why a client might be looking for an alternative to simply wallpapering an entire room:
-Living in an apartment, you might not be allowed to wallpaper the walls
-Budget might not allow for buying multiple rolls of wallpaper at one time
-Or maybe you love the look of the pattern but don’t want it to be that predominate in the space
If you fall into one of these categories or are just looking for an interesting new way to work with wallpaper Urban Source has some ideas for you!
Idea #1: Wallpaper your stairs!
We recommend using a vinyl wall covering or a thicker paper for this application. Stairs are a high traffic area, so it is best to find a durable product. However, if the pattern you love only comes in a regular paper, you can also talk to your installer about putting a protective coating over the paper.

Idea #2: Applying wallpaper to furniture!
Instead of painting an old piece of furniture, try adding a pattern! Wallpaper the whole piece for a bold statement or just the insides of drawers and shelves to add a touch of something special.

Wallpapering inside of bookcases is also a design favorite.

Idea #3: Wallpaper as art!
Every pattern that is printed on wallpaper begins as original art work created by the surface designer. So if you love a pattern but don’t love the idea of a floor to ceiling repeat, treat it like the art work it is! Buy a roll of wallpaper and mount the drops on foam core or gator board. Then simply hang the board on the wall.

Another option is putting the wallpaper into a large frame.

This is a great solution for apartment dwellers. There is no permanent application to the walls and the defined pattern helps delineate between the functional spaces of a small living area. Here you can see the patterned board helps define the office space.

Or apply the wallpaper inside the existing molding on your walls.

Normally, for wallpaper there is a minimum order of one roll. So if you do have extra paper left over from the roll you can use the remainder for any of these other wallpaper ideas. Now that’s what you call getting your money’s worth!

Idea #4: Wallpaper your ceiling!
There are several different reasons why wallpapering a ceiling might be the right statement for you. Having a pattern on the ceiling creates a vertical dialogue throughout the space.

It also makes a room seem more embracing or inviting because every surface has been considered.

It works great for small spaces. So you can optimize every surface with good design!

Patterns can happen in many different ways. This powder room, with the gold pattern on the ceiling, actually has a stencil application on the ceiling (from: Cutting Edge Stencils)
